When a friend invited me to go with her to “Alex Trendler Reads Your Mind” at the Blue Jay Listening Room, I didn’t know what exactly we’d be seeing, but it looked interesting, so I decided to go along.
His website describes him as an “Award Winning Psychic Entertainer, Mentalist and Sommelier,” quite a unique combo. The experience is sort of like a magic show, but more mental magic. He managed to surprise and impress the audience from his very first act.
Please excuse the dark photos. That’s all I could get with my phone in the dark room, and I was near the back.
The Venue: Blue Jay Listening Room
This was my second time at the Blue Jay Listening Room, located at 2457 3rd St S, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250. It’s a really cute little venue where they feature live music and other performers. The first time I went there was for a comedy show.
The place has a great vibe, from the decor to the people working there, and would recommend checking out a show there if you haven’t discovered it yet!
They serve wine, beer, wine-based cocktails and THC beverages. I forgot the name of the drink I had, but it was made with rosé, muddled lemon, blueberries and a bit of club soda (or something close to that.) Very refreshing!
The Show: Alex Trendler Reads Your Mind
Before the show starts, Alex requests everyone to put their birthdate and either a question, or a statement about themselves on the card. You then fold it up and turn it in.
He will use these at the end of the show and will tell you what is on the card before opening them up.
He starts off the show with a numerical trick (not sure if that’s what you would call it, but that’s the best description I have) using the calculator.
He requests everyone take out their phone calculator so you can do the math along with him. I can’t recall the exact order of things, but this is the gist of it- Random people choose a couple numbers, you multiply them. Then he chooses someone from the audience to poke a few numbers on the calculator without looking. You then multiply that.
The numbers that were the result:
Take a closer look at that big number and break it down. We were seeing the show on 8/24 and it was exactly 8:27. You can see the time stamp in the upper left.
Mind. Blown. He was off to a good start!
Audience Participation Necessary but Also Optional
Audience participation is a big part of the show, but he makes it very clear from the beginning that he isn’t going to single anyone out or force anyone on stage who doesn’t want to be there.
And there were plenty of willing participants! So, if you just want to hide in the back and watch, feel comfortable knowing that is totally fine.
My friend Robin was one of the first volunteers, for a portion of the show that involved four people on stage, and each drew a picture.
They then put their pictures facedown and they were shuffled, so you couldn’t tell who the pictures belonged to. Alex picked the pictures up one by one and matched them to their artist.
The one he didn’t draw was my friend Robin’s pic. Of course that would be an easy guess at this point, so instead of matching her sketch, he had her concentrate on what she drew, and he drew the same thing!
She had drawn a fish surrounded by bubbles and he drew a similar fish scene. It seems Alex Trendler did indeed, read her mind!
The Group Reading
He had several more unique feats of mind reading, but you’ll have to see the show to find out what other tricks he has up his sleeve. (or in his head)
He closed the show with a sort of group tarot reading but using regular playing cards. He also took some time to explain how the playing cards are similar to tarot cards, just without all the imagery.
And then the final event everyone was waiting for- he pulled a few of our cards out of a bowl and also had a couple audience members pull one out.
He did not look at the cards, but held him up to his forehead, and I couldn’t help but think of Johnny Carson as Carnac the Magnificent reading the questions through the envelope.
But his answers were much more insightful than Carson’s!
Some he chose were statements people had written about themselves. One girl had dated the lead singer of Pantera, and another person was having sexy dreams about Batman.
He does request people to not write lewd or embarrassing things on the cards, and he did not single out Batman’s biggest fan, but we all got a pretty good laugh out of that one.
Then there were also questions, which ranged from “Am I on the right path?” to “Where should I move?”
If you do go to the show, I would encourage you to write a good question, because his answers were very insightful. Like a quick personal reading from a talented psychic.
After the Show
Alex doesn’t end his show after his time on stage ends. He spends time after the show interacting with his audience on a more personal level.
So, if you do go, plan to stick around. He mentioned he does everything from physic readings to past life regression.
I wasn’t aware of that and needed to hurry home to get the kiddo to bed on a school night, so we didn’t get to stick around. But otherwise, we would have stayed later.
My friend and I both had a really good time at the show. We were definitely entertained and impressed. I would recommend checking it out if you are looking for something a little different to do one night.
