If you are looking for a fun and crafty girls night out, or family activity in Jacksonville Beach, FL, Wick N Twisted offers candle making classes, often combined with other special events. We recently attended the Candle Making and Magical Terrarium class, where they partnered with Gardenista Jax for twice the fun.
Walk-ins are welcome for their regular candle making, but they suggest calling ahead of you have a party of six or more. The special events do require purchasing tickets in advance.
You can find all kinds of classes on their website at: https://wickntwisted.com/
DIY Candles at Wick N Twisted
Your DIY candle making experience begins by picking out three scents to blend together to create your own unique scent. There are a lot of choices!
If you can’t find three, they will help you choose what blends best with the scent you picked.

Next you pick your container. Certain styles are included with your class, but you can upgrade for an additional fee if you want something fancier.
The next step is to name your candle and put the sticker on the bottom. My son chose a few fruity scents and named our candle “Waterfruit Bob.”
Then you’ll stick the wick to the bottom of the candle.

Adding Wax and Scents
After your candle is ready comes the wax and the addition of your chosen scents. They pour the wax in and then you add the scents drop by drop.
They will explain the full process of adding the scented oil and how to mix it with your wax. You’ll also get a lesson on how to burn your candle for optimal results.

Wine and Beer Optional
Wick N Twisted takes the DIY approach one step further with their self-service beer and wine taps. You’ll need to get a card from them, and then you scan that to get your drinks. It will show you exactly how much you are spending as you fill your glass.
They have a pretty good selection of beer and wine to choose from. I like how you can add as much or as little to your glass as you’d like.

Magical Terrarium with Gardenista Jax
The second part of our class was creating a magical terrarium with Gardenista Jax.
Gardenista Jax is a personal plant stylist for indoor and outdoor landscapes and plants, plus they also do workshops like this one. Find out more here: https://www.gardenistajax.com/
The kids got to pick out live succulents for their terrarium and learn how to set it up and care for it.

They put in dirt, rocks, colorful moss, their succulent and then fun little figurines like mushrooms and butterflies.
Next Up: Candle Making Girls Night Out
After helping the kids with their candle crafts, we all wanted to go back and make our own candles!
The candles take a couple hours to solidify, so we went across the street for dinner at Salt Life, then were able to pick up our candles before heading home. You can also pick them up the next day if you don’t want to wait.
How to Burn Your Candle and Make it Last
Your Wick N Twisted candle making class also includes a lesson in the correct way to burn a candle, so it lasts longer and smells better.
Here’s how to do it right:
1. Trim the Wick First
Before each burn, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (6 mm). This prevents high flames, sooting, and uneven burning.
2. Let It Burn Long Enough
During the first burn, allow the candle to melt all the way to the edges of the container. This prevents “tunneling,” where wax builds up along the sides and wastes the candle.
3. Keep It Away from Drafts
Burn your candle in a spot free from fans, open windows, or strong air currents. Drafts cause uneven burning and may lead to flickering or smoking.
4. Burn Time Matters
Don’t burn your candle for more than 3–4 hours at a time. Extending the burn can cause the wick to mushroom or the glass to overheat.
5. Always Watch It
Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
6. Extinguish It the Right Way
Use a snuffer to put out the flame instead of blowing it out—this avoids wax splatter and reduces smoke.
By following these tips, your candle will burn more cleanly, evenly, and last longer—plus your space will smell amazing.
We really enjoyed the experience with both Wick N Twisted and Gardenista Jax!
