The Gardyn hydroponic system uses uniquely shaped hydroponic pods they call yCubes. Here’s how you can reuse your Gardyn yCubes and save money while getting more plants for your money.

How to Reuse Gardyn yCubes
The Gardyn only works with their very specifically designed hydroponic pods, so to get started you’ll need to order plants through the Gardyn app. I have yet to try any other pods in the system but will update if I find a suitable alternative.
The yCubes will arrive filled with planting medium and seeds. You just add water and get growing. Once your plants are ready to harvest, then you can save the yCube instead of tossing it out.
You can reuse your Gardyn yCubes usually two or three times before they get too brittle and break apart. Reusing them and making your own seedlings makes it easy to take advantage of the multiple plants that sprout and also using your own seeds.
Carefully Harvest Your Plant
Pop your plant out and then either twist or chop it off at the base, leaving the growing medium and roots in the yCube.
Remove the Growing Medium
Tear off as many roots as possible and carefully push the growing medium up from the bottom so it pops out of the top without damaging the fragile bottom pieces.
Replace with Fresh Plant
After you clean off the yCube, you can pop in a fresh plant you’ve grown using your own growing medium. I use Rapid Rooter plugs, which are on Amazon for around $20. Click here for Rapid Rooter plugs.
I also use these pods for all the extra seedlings that the yCube plants ordered from Gardyn produce! Each plant comes with 5 or 6 seeds, and they usually say you need to thin them down to one or two.
Instead of throwing away those perfectly good sprouts, I just put them in their own pod and let them grow! I can get 3 to 5 plants for every one plant I purchase.

I do suggest you do this over the sink or a bowl, as the growing medium will be full of water, and it can get messy when you squish it!
And make sure you use your fingers to push it out using the open spaces. The bottom pieces do break off easily.
