Gardening is evolving, and hydroponics is leading the way. This soil-free growing method is gaining popularity due to the introduction of at-home hydroponic growing systems like Lettuce Grow and Gardyn that make it easy for anybody to get started.
At home, I have both a Lettuce Grow Farmstand and a Gardyn, and I am never without fresh lettuce, herbs and veggies year-round! By growing plants in nutrient-rich water solutions, hydroponic gardening offers numerous advantages that make it worth trying for beginners and seasoned gardeners alike.
What is Hydroponic Gardening?
Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil, using water infused with essential nutrients. Plants are supported in inert mediums like coconut coir, perlite, or clay pellets, while their roots are exposed to the water and nutrient solution. This system allows for precise control over the growing environment, resulting in faster and more efficient plant growth.

The Many Benefits of Hydroponic Gardening
1. Space-Saving Solution
Hydroponic systems are ideal for small spaces, making them perfect for urban apartments, balconies, or even indoors. Vertical hydroponic setups allow you to grow multiple plants in a compact area, maximizing your yield in limited space.
I have two hydroponic towers in my living room and love the sounds of the waterfall and the extra light from my grow lights.
2. Water Efficiency
Hydroponics uses significantly less water than traditional gardening. Since water is recirculated in a closed system, it minimizes waste, making it an environmentally friendly option, especially in regions facing water scarcity.
I only have to remember to water my plants once a week or so and just top off the tanks.

3. Faster Growth and Higher Yields
Plants grown hydroponically often grow up to 50% faster than those grown in soil. With a steady supply of nutrients and controlled environmental conditions, plants can focus on growth rather than expending energy searching for nutrients.
Lettuce Grow sells three-week old seedlings, but I save money by starting the seeds myself. I can have a very lush garden in a short amount of time.
4. Pest and Weed Control
By eliminating soil, hydroponic gardening drastically reduces the risk of soil-borne pests and weeds. This means fewer chemicals, less maintenance, and healthier plants.
And while weeds are completely eliminated, it’s still possible to get pests, even with an indoor hydroponic garden.
I usually get a couple carnivorous plants next to my hydroponic tower to catch bugs and gnats that the water can sometimes attact.

5. Year-Round Growing
Hydroponics allows you to grow fresh produce no matter the season. With indoor setups and grow lights, you can enjoy fruits, vegetables, and herbs even in the coldest months. No more worrying about a winter freeze!
6. Sustainability
This gardening method promotes sustainability by using fewer resources and producing less waste. It’s a great way to grow your own food, reduce your carbon footprint, and support a more eco-conscious lifestyle.
What Can You Grow with Hydroponics?
Hydroponics works well for a variety of plants. Leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and kale thrive in these systems, as do herbs like basil, cilantro, and mint.
You can also grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and strawberries. With advanced setups, even root vegetables and certain fruiting plants can be grown successfully.
I grow lots of different varieties of lettuce and greens, along with herbs and a few vegetables. Vegetables tend to eventually overtake the garden and get out of control. Greens and herbs are much easier to maintain.
Getting Started with Hydroponics
Starting a hydroponic garden is easier than you might think! Beginners can purchase pre-assembled hydroponic kits, which include everything needed to get started.
I’ve tried both Lettuce Grow and Gardyn. Gardyn is the easiest to get going and maintain, while Lettuce Grow actually grows the best and costs less in the long run.
As you gain experience, you can learn how to maintain your own systems rather than relying on the company’s nutrients and plants.
