Did you know Atlantic Beach, FL residents can apply for two free trees for their front yard?
Thanks to an update on the Chapter 23 (commonly known as the tree code) code of ordinances, the city has expanded the use of tree-conservation funds to plants trees in font yards on private property. Funds to plant trees come from property owners who paid into the tree mitigation fund.
The trees must be planted in the front yard or the side yard which adjoins a public right-of-way for corner lots.
Applications are open now to adopt a tree (or two). Click here to apply.
Types of Trees You Can Choose: Maple, Bald Cypress, Southern Magnolia, Sweetbay Magnolia, East Palatka Holly, Yaupon Holly, Live Oak, Winged Elm, American Elm, Slash Pine, Green Ash

After you apply, city staff will inspect the site to determine any restrictions on the location of new trees. If there are any issues found with placement, staff may deny the application or recommend a new tree location or a different tree species.
The property owner is responsible for maintaining the trees, and possibly planting them. The application sounds like they city will come out and do the planting in the spring and fall, but my neighbor got two trees, and his were just in buckets for him to plant himself.
But then I ran across this tree that looks placed by the city and includes a sign and handy QR code to learn more.
So, you might want to ask about that when you hand in your application!
Either way, it’s a pretty awesome program that helps our beautiful tree canopy continue to thrive in Atlantic Beach.
Applications are open now! Click here to apply.
