Every Easter our yard lights up with bright red Amaryllis flowers with yellow centers. Because of that, I’ve always called them Easter Lilies. I’ve since learned they are actually not a lily at all, but an Amaryllis or Hippeastrum puniceum, a stunning flowering plant native to the Caribbean region, particularly Barbados, hence the popular name Barbados Lily.

A Closer Look at the Amaryllis Red Barbados Lily
The Amaryllis Red Barbados Lily, scientifically known as Hippeastrum puniceum, belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family, which includes other popular flowers like daffodils and snowdrops. One of the most distinctive features of this lily is its vibrant red petals, often with a velvety texture, and a striking yellow or white throat at the center.
Symbolism and Meaning
Like many flowers, the Amaryllis Red Barbados Lily carries symbolic meaning. It is often associated with love, passion, and beauty, making it a popular choice for romantic occasions such as weddings and anniversaries. The deep red color symbolizes strength and determination, adding a meaningful touch to bouquets and floral arrangements.

Growing and Care Tips
Our Amaryllis originally came from my mom’s yard. I started with a just a few and every year there are more and more. They require very little care and propagate easily on their own.
Through most of the year they look like plain green leafed plants and die back after blooming. But when they bloom, Wow! The red and yellow is a spectacular color combo that really brightens up the yard.
If you’re considering adding Amaryllis to your garden, here are some growing and care tips to ensure their health and beauty:
- Location: Plant your lilies in well-draining soil with plenty of sunlight. They thrive in areas with partial shade, especially in hot climates. Ours get full sun most of the day, with shade in the afternoon.
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply once a week, especially during the growing season, and reduce watering during dormant periods.
- Fertilization: Use a balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering plants to promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Apply according to package instructions.
- Mulching: Mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and prevent weed growth.
- Pest and Disease Control: Monitor for pests like aphids and spider mites and treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Watch for signs of fungal diseases and apply fungicides as needed.
Landscape and Design Ideas
The Amaryllis Red Barbados Lily is not only a beautiful addition to gardens but also a versatile flower for landscaping and design purposes. Here are a few ideas to incorporate these stunning lilies into your outdoor space:
- Plant them in clusters or borders for a dramatic pop of color.
- Combine them with other flowering plants like white daisies or purple salvia for a vibrant and harmonious display.
