A Good Day for Sea Glass and Shark Teeth

We usually find sea glass in Atlantic Beach, but I feel pretty lucky whenever I find a shark tooth. We usually find a handful of glass and one tooth at the most. But last week we found 15 shark’s teeth!

Keelan found nine of them and I found six. Then the next day, Sean found his very first tooth, ever. We’ve been walking this beach for seven years and he’s never found one tooth until now. And it was a good size one too!

What is Sea Glass?

Sea glass, also known as beach glass, is a beautiful and fascinating coastal gem that is created through the natural processes of wave action and erosion. It starts its journey as discarded glass bottles, jars, and other glassware that find their way into the ocean. Over many years, the glass is tumbled and smoothed by the waves, creating uniquely colored and frosted pieces that wash up on beaches around the world.

The most common colors of sea glass are green, brown, and clear, but occasionally rare colors such as red, orange, and turquoise can also be found. More than half the glass we find is brown, from broken beer bottles. So, we always get excited to find green and shades blue.

Each piece of sea glass is unique and tells a story of its own. We always try to guess what the glass was from when we find it. Some of the more unique pieces have writing on them or pictures.

Due to its increasing rarity and environmental significance, sea glass has gained popularity not only as a collector’s item but also as a material for jewelry, crafts, and coastal decor. Its allure lies not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in the sense of mystery and adventure that comes with discovering these weathered remnants of human activity along the shorelines.

Shark Teeth are a Link to the Past

Along the shores of many coastal destinations, including our own Atlantic Beach, the chance discovery of shark teeth offers a captivating insight into the ancient history of the ocean and its formidable inhabitants.

Shark teeth, often found nestled in the sand or hidden among shell fragments, serve as a tangible link to a time long past. These fossilized remains, dating back millions of years, were once an integral part of the formidable jaws of sharks that roamed the depths of ancient seas.

In Atlantic Beach, a variety of shark’s teeth can be found, such as tiger sharks, bull sharks, great whites, mako sharks, sand tiger sharks, and even the prehistoric megalodon. The diversity of shark teeth found in the area provides a fascinating glimpse into the ancient marine ecosystems that once thrived in the Atlantic Ocean.

Ocean Treasures

Our seaside strolls seldom conclude without a pocketful of beach treasures. Whether it’s a uniquely contoured seashell, an ancient fossil, or a frosted sea glass gem, each find holds its own allure.

We love saving our beach treasures and display the glass in pretty vases and a large glass bowl. Our collection of ocean treasures serves as a beautiful reminder of the wonders waiting to be unearthed along the ever-changing shoreline.
