The Road to Agave and O’kahan LLC

Keane & Coastal is about to branch out in a unique way, as Sean is working on turning his passion for Mezcal into a business. He’s just registered O’kahan LLC, and his first venture will be creating a mezcal called O’kahan Agave.

What is Mezcal?

Mezcal is a traditional Mexican spirit with a rich history and cultural significance. It is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the agave plant, specifically the maguey variety. The production of mezcal involves roasting the agave hearts in underground pits, which gives it a distinctive smoky flavor.

Unlike its close relative, tequila, which is made only from blue agave in specific regions of Mexico, mezcal can be produced from a variety of agave species and is crafted in several regions across the country. This results in a diverse range of flavors and profiles, making each mezcal unique.

The artisanal nature of mezcal production has led to its growing popularity in the global spirits market, and its unique smokey flavor is what attracted Sean to this particular beverage.

Why O’kahan Agave?

The agave part is obvious, as mezcal is made from the agave plant. But you might be wondering what or who is O’kahan?

The Irish surname O’Kahan has an interesting historical background that ties to the name Keane (our last name). The prefix “O'” signifies “descendant of” in Gaelic, and “Kahan” is derived from the Gaelic name “Cathán,” meaning “battle” or “warrior.”

The Keane surname, on the other hand, is derived from the Gaelic “Ó Catháin,” which also denotes a connection to the Cathán lineage. Both surnames bear connotations of strength, valor, and ancestral ties, reflecting a rich heritage with ties to concepts of resilience and heritage.

What’s Next for O’kahan?

In March Sean will be traveling to Mexico, where the agave farms are located and the mezcal is produced. He will meet with a Mezcalero who will help him develop the flavor of his mezcal.

Leading up the that we’re working on branding, logo and bottle design. It’s a lot of work and a lot of decisions, and I’ll be documenting most of it right here on the blog.
